Photomicrographs of the welds that the mechanical tests will come from. Both types look very good. The M42 weld is in CDA10700. The M46 weld is between CDA10700 and CDA18150. The bright areas are small grain size regions and that there is no lack of fusion adjacent to the overlap of the two weld passes. The tensile tests in the cross-weld direction have been pulled. They all failed in the softer base metal. In the CDA 10700, the weld area necked much less than the base metal, causing a bulge in the middle of the specimen length. In the dissimilar weld, the weld and the hard side had about the same deformation, while the soft side necked extensively. EWI will knock off the bend specimens and then provide you will the full mechanical results. EWI will be issuing the written report by the end of September. Progress on Disruption Analysis analysis [Titus (see VGs) ] Photos taken during fabrication indicate that welds holding the brackets to the VV wall may be larger than the 1/8" that was required on the drawings. The code requires larger weld sizes for the VV plate thickness, may be a problem to qualify unless we can produce some testing with the 1/8" weld to qualify our process and welders. ACTION: Jim C. to lookup the run copy of the installation procedure to see if there is any notations indicating deviation of weld sizes. Calculation progress, checking [Titus (see VGs) ] Provided a spreadsheet listing the calculations required to complete the design verification and noted where some still need to be completed and/or checked. All calculations need to be provided with a calculation cover sheet which provides enough information that permits it to be repeated in the future. See attached ENG033 "Design Verfication" procedure for the cover sheet form and more information.
